The Interactive Notebook: Assignment #1




  1. Explain the difference between what you thought rhetoric meant before you started reading this book, and what you now know it to mean.

  2. Find a picture on the Internet of a map that illustrates where rhetoric was first studied. Paste it on the left side of the page.

  3. Do the same with a picture of one of the leading figures of rhetoric from around the 5th century. Paste it along the picture of your map.

  4. Describe a time you used reason to talk someone into doing something you wanted them to do. List the steps you used.

  5. Describe a time someone used reason to talk you into doing something he/she wanted you to do. List the steps used.

  6. Describe a time you purchased something on impulse. Why do you think you did it?

  7. Explain your understanding of the concept: "You can never not communicate" (page 7). What exactly do the authors mean by this?

  8. Summarize the six rhetorical purposes in your own words and provide an example of each.
